Spotted this in @Zcash community forum, in... 2021! Is StarkWare a threat to ZCash ? 👀 Honestly, that's a very interesting question. I have mixed feelings on this. Yeah Starknet tech has very interesting properties and advantages that could make it a serious contender to become a "scalable ZCash" / "future proof ZCash" / "next ZCash". On the other hand, ZCash has for it many advantages that Starknet does not have (POW distribution, test of time, battle tested, privacy focused from the beginning). Also, it's so relieving to see a comeback to fundamentals and cypherpunk ethos triggered largely by recent spike of interest on ZCash. For once the trendy new shiny meta actually makes sense and is not bullshit. I hope this will last and help to cut the noise dramatically and help the industry to get rid of 99% of it that is complete bullshit. So yeah, thanks @zooko and ZCash for this comeback to fundamentals that you sparked. As I said multiple times, I wish ZCash would be a Bitcoin L2. As I wish Starknet to become a Bitcoin L2. If there is one thing that everything agrees on, it's the need for privacy on Bitcoin. And ZK rollups (and other privacy features that could be built on the base layer with native ZK verification) in the future can be a great way to bring privacy to Bitcoin. You could also see Starknet tech as a foundation to experiment building private L2s on a private L1 like ZCash. Maybe they can complement each other. Anyway, privacy is normal, and it's good to see this momentum around it.
